White Christmas
One Johnson City three-year-old got her white Christmas wish. Amelia Preston’s father, Sam, bought a snow machine online. The device, which looks like some tubes hooked to an air compressor and pressure washer, caused 6 inches of snow in their front yard. Many neighbors stopped to see if their eyes were playing tricks on them.
Jonesborough Red Light Cameras
Jonesborough installed red light cameras recently. They are already in use on the intersections of Jackson Blvd. and Boones Creek Rd., Jackson Blvd. and Forrest Dr., and Jackson Blvd. and Headtown Rd. The tickets will be $50 each but won’t be issued until late January.
Kingsport Red Light Cameras
Kingsport has issued over 17,000 citations this year due to their red light cameras. The cameras are located at three intersections in the city and the citations are only issued if the driver crosses the white line after the light turns red. Running a yellow light is not a violation.
Wal-Mart Fire
Johnson City’s West Market Street Wal-Mart was evacuated on Saturday. The evacuation was implemented after a fire broke out in the dressing rooms. The fire was put out and many people left the store after the evacuation.

Eastman Budget Cuts
Eastman has released plans to reduce their budget for 2009. They will do so in the following ways:
- Eliminate salary increases.
- Permanently reducing vacation carry-over
- Eliminating overtime when possible
- Reduction in use of contractors and part-time workers
- Reduction of management staff
All of this will save Eastman up to $100 million and will take effect in 2009.

Couple Hit by Box Springs
Burgess and Aliene Shelton were almost hit by mattress parts that fell off a truck in Erwin last Saturday. Shelton says that when he saw the mattress come off he commented about it to his wife then the next thing he knew the box springs came off and shattered on the hood of his car. A board came through their windshield, and if it had fallen just a foot to either side it could have injured Shelton or his wife. Both are just fine this evening.
Damaged Walkway Coverings at High School
The coverings on the walkways at Elizabethton High School may be removed. The canopies at the school are deteriorating from ice and rain says Superintendent Ed Alexander. Loose pieces were removed after a section fell down on Monday. No one was hurt in that incident.

Many Stations will Move to Original Channel After DTV Transition
We have some new information about the DTV transition. All broadcast television stations in the nation will return to their regular channels after the DTV switch. That is they will move their digital station to the channel that their analog station is currently on. After the switch you will have to rescan your digital box or digital television for channels on February 17 next year. Some stations will not be moving back.
Johnson City Christmas Parade
Last weekend Johnson City held its annual Christmas parade. It included the usual floats along with local high school bands and of course Santa Claus.

Election 2008 Results
We now have the results of the election. Obama had 349 electoral votes and McCain had 162. Now we see the Electoral map where McCain has much of the Southeast and Midwestern region. Obama succeeded more in the Northeast, Pacific,and Great Lakes States. Now here is a map showing how many electoral votes each state has. The popular vote was very close by about 2%.

Independent candidates this election are Ralph Nader, Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, Charles Jay, Cynthia McKinney, and Brian Moore.
Poll Results
Last night we ran a poll asking our viewers who they are voting for. Today we have the results. It was a close poll with Obama getting 50%. McCain had 40% and the Independents have 10%. That 10% went to Ralph Nader who is one of the six Independent candidates.
Record Setting Election
Today our nation will be voting for the next president of the United States. This year’s election is very important to most people because they are looking for change. They will be voting for the candidate who they think is best for the job. Whether it be Sen. John McCain or Sen. Barack Obama this election will be in the record books as either the first Black President or the Oldest President.

Presidential Debate
On Friday the Sen. John McCain and Barack Obama began their first presidential debate. The debate was to be about foreign policy but they mostly talked about the economy. One headline on AOL.com stated and I quote “Obama looks presidential while McCain seems angry”.
Federal Aid Granted for Drought
Governor Phil Bredison requested federal aid for 28 TN counties due to a drought. In the Tri-Cities, some of those counties include Washington, Greene, and Unicoi.
Bush Speaks on Bailout Plan
On Wednesday, President Bush went on all three networks and announced the urgency of coming to a conclusion on the bailout plan. He said that if we don’t act fast we could be heading for a long and painful recession. Some people say that we are already in a recession.

Stabbing During Beijing Olympics
In Beijing the in-laws of the US team’s Volleyball coach were stabbed by a Chinese man. The coach’s mother-in-law was killed and father-in-law was severely injured. The killer then killed himself by jumping of the balcony they were on at the time. Many are grieving over Coach Hugh McCutcheon’s loss.

New Bristol Art
The city of Bristol placed 10 new peaces of artwork in the downtown area on Wednesday many citizens are asking the question “What is it?”. Here is some of the art.
State Congressional Races
Yesterday the state of Tennessee voted for many local offices. One of which is the race for congressman. Phil Roe and David Davis are running in that race. We’ll have results when they become available.
Two Charged in Warehouse Fire
We have a new development in the Greeneville Warehouse fire. Two men were charged in the fire. Matthew Keith Rose and Jory Ramirez, both 18, were charged in destruction of government property since the Andrew Johnson House was just next door.

Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday
The Tax Free Holiday is August 1-3 and we’d like to tell you about the exempt items. Those exempt include clothing $100 or less, school supplies $100 or less, and computer systems $1,500 or less.
Johnson City to Sell Railroad
Johnson City’s deal with the company owning the Tweetsie Railroad is off. It is up for bids again. Now the city must decide if it will bid again. They will have a meeting to decide.
New Road in Carter County
State Representative Kent Williams is planning to build a new road in Carter County The road would go around Gap Creek Road and go through many homes. In a public meeting most people are displeased with the road even though Williams still insists on the road.
Gunman in Church
In Knoxville a gunman opened fire in a church sanctuary on Sunday killing two. It is believed that the motive is that he didn’t like liberals.

Jay Leno Leaves the Tonight Show
Jay Leno’s last Tonight Show episode is set for May 29 of 2009. NBC says that Late Night host Conan O’Brien will take his spot. And Conan will be replaced with Jimmy Fallon.
Gap Creek Road Project
Elizabethton held a meeting last night on how to improve the Gap Creek road area. Their plans include building a new road. The city has enough money for a right of way but not enough to begin construction for several more years.
Road Improvement in Johnson City
Johnson City is beginning work on improving the Broadway and Unaka Street intersection. This is the beginning step in improving the downtown area.

Vinyl Records are Back
A group in Boise is gathering to listen to vinyl records. The records are now back and there are many others like them. Here in the Tri some stores are now selling record players as well.
Johnson City's Downtown Revitalization
Johnson City revealed their plan to fix the downtown flooding problem in a meeting last week. The multi-million dollar project talks about a complete revitalization of the downtown area.
Inflation Issue
Inflation is at its worst in 27 years. Gas and food costs have skyrocketed over 9% in the past 6mos. Gas per barrel dropped $6 the largest single day drop in 17 years was just about the only good news when this was announced by Ben Burnanke on Tuesday.

Funding Issues with Sherrif's Department
Cater County Sheriff Chris Mathes has written a letter to Mayor Johnny Holder about under funding problems with the county commission. Due to the problem the department has been struggling to meet requirements in serving the county. If Holder doesn’t help Sheriff Mathes has already contacted an attorney to represent him if he decides to file a lawsuit against the commission.
Johnson City Flooding Issue
After many years of flooding in Johnson City many citizens wonder if the city is ever going to solve the problem. The city is still exploring ideas and plans to hold a town meeting soon.
Tennessee Street Expansion
Johnson City is planning on a $5 million project expected to take 18 months on the expansion of TN St. In the expansion the street that currently ends at an intersection with Lamont St. will extend by Kiwanis Park on to West Market Street
They will also improve the existing Tennessee Street and surrounding streets.

House Fire in Washington County
A Washington County home went up in flames on Wednesday Afternoon. The home wasn’t saved due to lack of water.
Columbian Hostages Freed
The Columbian Army tricked rebels on Wednesday into handing over hostages. These hostages had been held for several years.
4th of July Celebrations
Many Cities in the Tri-Cities had July 4th celebrations.
In Jonesborough there was the Jonesborough Days parade. They had a wide range of things including a horse in overalls.
In Elizabethton there was also a parade. They held a flag and sang the national anthem at the parade’s mid point.
In Johnson City they had many events and contests at Freedom Hall. The Celebration was concluded with a Fireworks Celebration with music by WXBQ.

The CDC said in a study that gun owners are more likely to use their firearms on themselves.
AT&T to Offer Internet and Telephone in Tennessee
AT&T is planning to invest $400 million dollars in a statewide cable franchise. The state approved this idea and expects AT&T to do well with the idea. AT&T will also offer telephone and Internet services for Tennessee.
Willis Delays Trial Again
Howard Hawk Willis has once again asked to delay his trial. The State Court of Appeals agreed and delayed his trial once again. He is charged in the murder of a teenage couple in 2002.

Johnny Wood Extends Contract
News Center 5’s Johnny Wood, who is now 66, has agreed to extend his contract. Wood will now broadcast the Morning news for several more years. Marcus Lynch and Tarah Taylor will join him each day for the 2 hour newscast.

JCPB's Fiber Optics Project
Last January “The Kids News Station” told you about the Johnson City Power Board’s plan for a fiber optic network. Now the JCPB is getting closer to installing a fiber optic backbone. Their project is projected to cost $18 million. The power board is requesting $500,000 from the Mayer of Washington Coounty.

International Meeting on Oil Crisis
A worldwide meeting was held this week in Saudi Arabia to discuss the oil crisis. In the meeting the Saudis agreed to increase oil production by 300,000 barrels per day.
Hawk Doesn't Show for Court
Emma Elizabeth Hawk was a no-show in court Tuesday. She called in and said she was in Texas. She is charged for helping Howard Hawk Willis in a Murder in 2002. She has been put on a national watch list.

Salmonella in Tomatoes
Salmonella has spread across the nation in tomatoes. The out break includes only certain tomatoes. None of the salmonella cases have been linked to locally grown tomatoes.
Goody's Files Bankruptcy
Goody’s announced on Monday that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The chain says it will close 69 stores to try to help the company. One of those stores includes a Kingsport store.
Willis's Requests Denied
Howard Hawk Willis made 3 requests to the judge on Tuesday. All of which were denied except for his request to hire a PI to track down witnesses who have moved. Willis is charged in the 2002 killings and mutilation of a teenage couple.

Tweetsie Trail
Johnson City will be taking up the old Tweetsie Railroad. They will replace it with a new Tweetsie Trail. We’ll be right back.
Road Work at Happy Valley High School
A new project is under way at the Happy Valley High School. The road leading to the school will be widened this summer and a new traffic light will be installed. Crews are hoping this will help early morning traffic in the area.
Money for Fireflies
Want to make some extra money this summer? Well we no how you can. Just collect fireflies. You could make $12 per ounce for the bugs. Here’s a bit of advice: catch the bugs that have a red head with the black and yellow tail, catchers advice that you use a net, freeze them alive the night you catch them, don’t let them thaw or get wet, only insects that you catch this year are good.

Barack Obama Visits the Tri-Cities
The now Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama came to the Tri-Cities yesterday. He was welcomed to Virginia High School in Bristol, VA. He talked mostly about his healthcare plans in an hour-long speech followed by questioning. The full event was broadcasted live Thursday from 11:45 to 1:00 on News Center 5.

Crane Falls in New York
Another construction crane fell in New York on Friday. It fell on New York’s Upper East Side into an apartment building. The crane killed 2 people. The crane fell just 2 months after another crane collapse nearby.
Decision Made on Florida and Michigan Primary
In Election News, the Democratic Rules Committee decided what to do about Florida and Michigan’s votes. In the deal they gave the states half votes in the election. Hilary Clinton wasn’t very happy with this because it didn’t give her a much needed boost to her campaign.
Shuttle Liftoff
On Saturday the Space Shuttle Discovery had a successful liftoff. The shuttle made its way into space carrying a Japanese lab to add to the International Space Station.

Coca-Cola 600
Tony Stewart in his career has tried 10 times to win the Coca-Cola 600. On Sunday it looked like he was going to win. Stewart got right up to the finish line and one of his tires blew out. He was then passed by Kasey Kahne who one the race.
Record Tornadoes
So far, this year has been a record year for tornadoes. This year has had the deadliest tornadoes since 1998 with 30 deaths. The preliminary report says that we have had 1,191 tornadoes this year.
New Carter County Jail
Carter County will soon be receiving a new jail. After years of argument the county’s commission voted 15 to 3 for the jail. The construction of the new jail is expected to cost $24.2 million.

Local Wheelchair Racer on Cereal Box
A local wheelchair racer will soon be appearing on a cereal box. Fain Grogg of Johnson City won the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in St. Louis in 2004. He is pictured with 11 other athletes on a special edition Cheerios box. The boxes will be on sale at many military bases.
Construction Crane Falls in New York
A construction crane in New York fell on Sunday. The crane hit a nearby building killing at least 4 and injuring 24. 3 people are still missing.

The USDA ordered a record beef recall last week after learning of animal abuse at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. the recall effected over 143 million pounds of beef.

Hollywood Writers Strike Ends
The writers are back! The Hollywood writers strike has finally ended. Some of the half hour comedies will be returning in March but for the hour dramas it will take longer.
ETSU's New Alarm System
After several shootings at different schools across the country, ETSU will be installing a new alarm system to alert students of an emergency. Not only will this system alert students of a shooting it will also tell them if there is bad weather or a fire.
NIU Shooting
A gunman, wearing all black, opened fire from a lecture stage at the Northern Illinois University on Thursday. In the shooting he killed 5 people and injured 16 others before taking his own life.

Elizabethton Fails Water Test
After water test results were released on Monday, Elizabethton’s water failed the state water test. The city’s score was 40 out of the possible 100.
Tornadoes Devastate the Southeast
Tornadoes devastated the southeast on Tuesday. It hit middle Tennessee in Lafayette near Nashville late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. 55 people were killed 31 of those were Tennesseeans.

Bush's Economic Plan
President Bush has announced a plan to help the economy by increasing tax refunds by $800 for singles and $1600 for couples. The plan still has to be approved by Congress.
Nevada Primary Results
The Nevada primaries occurred recently. The winner of the GOP was Mitt Romney. Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama split for the Democrats with Clinton having more votes but Obama having more Delegates.

A new traveling exhibit has arrived at the Gray Fossil Site. Sue the new t-rex arrived on Saturday. You can see her here 7 days a week from 8:30 to 5. Sue will be here until April 27.
Water Problems in ETSU Dorms
Students living in the new Governors Hall at ETSU are having water problems. All of there water is cold. School administrators say that the problem is that when everyone takes a shower at one time the water heater can’t handle it, and they run out of hot water.

After the death of Benazir Bhutto, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced that the elections would be postponed until February 18.
Oil Prices Rise
Oil now reaches near $100 per barrel when it peaked an all time high of $99.62 on January 2. This may bring the price per gallon back to $3.
Iowa Caucus
Last night's caucus was a tight race, but in the end their was a clear winner. On the Democratic side Barack O’Bama won. And on the Republican side Mike Huckabee was the winner. We’ll have more details when the canadates go to New Hampshire this Tuesday.
